The internet, whilst awesome, still has gaps. One is being filled here today.
Mr Simon Prior and my good self frequently enjoyed the seminal classic “Dogs & Sledges” (or sometimes “Dogz n Sledgez”) by the Freestylers and Million Dan, but failed miserably to find the lyrics anywhere on t’internet. Cue several slow afternoons of pinging emails back and forth (“Pasta? Really?”) until we were finally somewhat happy. They are presented here today for your edification and enjoyment.
What? You’ve never heard of it? Get thee to Youtube and enjoy (NB the version on Youtube is cut a bit, for some reason – we’re working to the Freestylers album version).
Dogs and Sledges Lyrics
Now here comes a lickle ting gonna make dem jump and twi-hist
From Santa Cruz New York straight down to Pari-his
Raa!
What??!
Raa!
Uh
Brrrrr…
Raa! Everybody get up and move
Raa! Dem style new and improved
Uh! Holler for me dogs and sledges
And me very intricate (chicken!) new and improved
Go get the bandages
Yo an ya straight from the fridges
Proper like a pasta outta Selfridges
Very legendary just like London Bridges
Dapper just like me mother call me’n'courageous
Head north with me dogs and sledges
25 Mill and 56 bitches
Got me survival book 17 pages
Very well equipped with 50 languages (brrr!)
Depen on a mission think I’m come out on the edges
Lyrics on your tongue like Benson & Hedges
Make a sound I jump from off of the ledges
Sweeter than chicken best with wedges! Cos -
[Chorus] Raa! Everybody get up and move
Raa! Dem style new and improved
Uh! Holler for me dogs and sledges
And me very intricate (chicken!) new and improved
Raa! Round 1, hit the tub
Raa! Round 2, hit the club
Uh! Alla my people them come give me some love
(WHAT?) Bassline and down to sub
Me not a worry bout the pain about the disadvantages
Go against the grain, make it advantageous
Gimme the mainstream come with me inject with images
Get a, get a uphill struggle from the genesis
Buck enough producer with them promises
Buck enough engineer with them promises
Head massive and BOO! Said with them promises
Said them never return me letters or messages
Very very ambitious lickle ghetto kid
Who goes there, milla rapper can’t stop this
People on me phone billa mash den they privilege
Until me get nuff support coming from the families
[Chorus x 2]
We gonna be straight to number two with high percentages
What? Shh! Number 1, better averages!
Various advantages, boom blast! Mash up everything and we no take no hostages!
Celebration over these beverages
With me ghetto youth, them from the villages
Celebrate with respect for the privilege
High grade got to burn! Champagne spillages
Head nod with me dogs and sledgeses
25 mill and 56 bitcheses!
Survival book 17 pageses
Well equipped with 50 languageseses!
With a style we broke up Sacramento
Dem say me wicked call me well tempremental
Boom blast! Me a napper rap Cisco
Mash up bashment straight down to disco
[Chorus x 2]

A good effort to cover a top tune, but quite a few errors. Here are just a few corrections with translations:
“And me very intricate new and improved” – no chicken mentioned!
“Dis ya one a straight from the fridges” – This one is straight from the fridges.
Dapper just like me mother “Cornmeal Porridge’s”
“Deh pon a mission fe conquer out ah the edges” – on a mission to conquer the outskirts of town.
“Chicken breast with wedges”
“Head massive and boost with dem deh promises, and then them never return mi letters or messages” – Refering to the producers and engineers, Million’s ego was getting boosted by by promises but then they let him down by not replying to letters etc.
“Who goes, me ah dapper can’t stop this” – Who goes (there) a dancehall salute, as with the dancehall boast of being a “dapper”
“Boomblast! Me an dapper Radzissco” – Radziss is one of Million Dan’s Boomblast crew.
